G. Wilkins Hubbard, II, MD, FACS
Sentara Surgery Specialists - Leigh
880 Kempsville Road, Ste. 1000
Norfolk, VA 23502
Administrative Contact: Tricia Bander, firstname.lastname@example.org; 757-261-5000
This flexible program is designed to accomplish a graduated and broad experience with a goal of preparing the Junior Associate to be able to evaluate emergent and non-emergent surgical patients in a protected setting. The practice at Sentara Leigh is the only surgical practice serving the hospital and accordingly sees a large volume of surgical patients and a variety of problems. The Emergency Room serves a large catchment area, and the on-call experience is busy and broad. The surgical service has a full complement of surgical house officers and medical students and is an active teaching service.
The experience will include the breadth of general surgical problems, laparoscopic surgery, critical care, practice management, participation in hospital committee structure, office practice and teaching, current issues related to coding (including ICD-10 transition), electronic medical record training, and quality initiatives.
The practice has a high volume of routine general surgery and minimally invasive cases including breast surgery, bowel resection, appendectomies, bowel obstructions, gallbladder, hernia, and endocrine surgery. In addition, there is substantial volume of complex benign and oncologic general and thoracic cases. Upper and lower endoscopy and bronchoscopy are performed as well.
The position would be structured for the participant to be a member of the medical staff and function as a “Junior Attending” on the teaching service. His or her involvement as a Junior Associate would be under direct supervision of the Senior Associates. The Junior Associate would be expected to be able to independently manage surgical and non-surgical problems by the conclusion of the rotation. The Junior Associate would be able to handle general surgery call, manage basic thoracic surgery problems (no vascular or trauma), and be ready to assume a fully capable partner or employee role.
