Session Code: PS321
Title: Is My Patient Going to Die? Integrating Calculations in Surgical Planning
Date and Time of Session: Wednesday, October 30: 12:45 pm - 2:15 pm
Location: Moscone Convention Center - Room: MW 2006/2008
Description: Perioperative discussions are based upon surgeons providing information to patients required to facilitate informed decision-making. Risk calculators are increasingly being promoted as a key component of shared decision-making to help patients and families understand the risks of perioperative morbidity and mortality. However, these calculators only address one aspect of preoperative planning and do not routinely incorporate disease-specific parameters. This Panel Session will review currently available prognostication tools such as frailty indices,, palliative performance scale, and the Karnofsky performance score which can be incorporated into standard perioperative discussions. A panel discussion format will be utilized to illustrate use of these prognostication tools into preoperative discussions using case-based examples. Participants will be provided practical tools for enhancing perioperative discussions to enhance goal-concordant care.
