American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Session Code: DC18
Title: Surgical Oncology for the Rural and Community Surgeon
Date and Time of Session: Wednesday, October 25: 9:00 am - 4:30 pm
Location: San Diego Convention Center - Room: 11A
Description: Rural America makes up twenty-five percent of the population; yet only nine percent of the nation’s physicians practice in rural areas. The majority of oncology care is provided by practitioners in the community setting. We will highlight rural and community programs that have successfully managed increasing volumes, evolving management guidelines, and further specialization among surgical disciplines. We will focus on the unique perspectives of building effective rural and community oncology programs, as well as factors associated with sustaining these efforts. Cancer care guidelines and genetic testing recommendations are changing rapidly. Patients with breast cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, thyroid cancer, and melanoma are commonly treated by general surgeons. Current care guidelines for breast cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, thyroid cancer, and melanoma will be reviewed. Screening guidelines and options for high risk populations will also be reviewed. Up-to-date Genetic testing guidelines for these disease sites will be reviewed.
