American College Of Surgeons - Inspiring Quality: Highest Standards, Better Outcomes

Session Code: SC02B
Title: Surgical Endoscopy: Essential Skills in Gastrointestinal Surgery (Lecture and Lab)
Date and Time of Session: Sunday, October 22: 8:00 am - 5:30 pm
Location: San Diego Convention Center - Room: 16AB
Description: Therapeutic endoscopy continues to change gastrointestinal surgery. The last decade alone has seen gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Barrett’s esophagus, achalasia, anastomotic leaks, and intestinal fistulas all being managed with endoscopic therapies. This course will show participants how to use flexible endoscopy to improve the care of patients with gastrointestinal disease and will include a brief summary of energy source knowledge and safe patient preparation for endoscopic procedures. This course will also address how the American Board of Surgery is working toward retooling the surgical workforce by mandating a curriculum in flexible gastrointestinal endoscopy with validated metrics of performance for all general surgical residents. The hands-on lab will introduce participants to techniques and technologies that can be readily introduced into their practice including dilation, clip placement, mucosal ablation, stent placement, endolumenal therapies for GERD, endoscopic suturing, endoscopic mucosal resection and peroral endoscopic myotomy.
