Title: Advanced Skills Training for Rural Surgeons: Laparoscopic Common Bile Duct Exploration and Closure of Complex Soft-Tissue Defects

Description: Laparoscopic Management of Common Bile Duct Stones: 1. Discuss the indications and contraindications for laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE). 2. Explain which method of LCBDE (i.e. transcystic or transcholedochal) is appropriate based on stone size and location. 3. Perform a simulated laparoscopic common bile duct exploration on a surgical simulator. 4. Demonstrate the steps of stone capture and extraction using a choledochoscope and wire basket during LCBDE on a surgical simulator. Soft Tissue Defect Closure: 1. Discuss the principles of primary wound closure 2. Demonstrate the use of basic skin flaps for the closure of soft tissue defects on the extremities and trunk 3. Demonstrate the use of split thickness skin graft for the repair of a soft tissue defect. Advanced Skills Training for the Rural Surgeon is a dynamic course that covers diverse technical skills that are applicable in various practice environments. This year’s course will cover two modules: laparoscopic management of common bile duct stones and reconstruction techniques for soft-tissue defects. The course will begin with didactic lectures to address key concepts for each module, followed by hands-on, mentored practice of surgical skills. NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL BE HELD AT A GOVERNMENT FACILITY. ALL PARTICIPANTS AND FACULTY WILL BE VETTED FOR SECURITY CLEARANCE IN ADVANCE. Registration for this course will close on September 22, 2017.
