Title: Surgical Ethics for the Practicing Surgeon
Date and Time of Session: Monday, October 23: 1:30 pm - 5:45 pm
Description: The goal of this postgraduate course will be to introduce central topics in surgical ethics to practicing surgeons as well as surgical trainees. A series of topics will be addressed in a case-based discussion to provide a framework for addressing such ethical issues in care of surgical patients as: informed consent, DNR in the operating room, disclosure of errors (by oneself and by other surgeons), withdrawing and withholding treatment, respect for autonomy and patients' willingness to take risks, futility in surgical care, innovative procedures, and ethics of surgical education. The format will be interactive with a high degree of participation by attendees. The session is designed to meet CME requirements for ethics hours that several states currently mandate.
