Title: Management of the Complex Older Surgical Patient: Geriatric and Palliative Care

Description: At the end of this session learners should: 1) become familiar with the CQGS standards for goal setting and decision making 2) become familiar with basic communications to respond to emotion 3) Practice using 4 key questions/phrases useful in eliciting goals of care in the deliberative phase of decision making As the population ages, there are increasing numbers of older surgical and trauma patients with complex needs, many of whom will also benefit from palliative care. This course will provide the evidence base and skills training for surgeons to improve quality and perioperative outcomes for older patients. A panel of national experts in geriatric surgery, trauma, ethics, surgical palliative care, and geriatrics will lead didactic and skills course in surgical decision making, communication skills, and perioperative care of older patients. This course will prepare participants to implement practice guidelines in palliative care and geriatric surgery that will be put forth in 2017 from the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program and National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.
