Program Highlights

The TTP Associate will spend the first six months in La Crosse, WI. Three months will be designed to acquire needed skill sets such as endoscopy, ob/gyn, hand surgery, otolaryngology, interventional radiology, vascular surgery, etc. There are no surgical specialty residencies at Gundersen other than general surgery and only one surgical subspecialty fellowship (bariatric), and scheduling will be made to avoid conflicts with surgical residents on these rotations. During the remaining three months in La Crosse, the TTP Associate will manage their own outpatient clinic and perform their own operations with a Senior Associate. As the TTP Associate gains autonomy, they may function as any other junior faculty member in the teaching of surgical residents. For the remaining six months, the TTP Associate will be based at one of four regional surgery sites with full-time Gundersen Health System regional surgeons who practice at smaller community hospitals. The TTP Associate will continue to take periodic emergency surgery and trauma call in La Crosse.

Program Description

In the first three-month period, the TTP Associate will run their own outpatient clinic and OR schedule and care for their own patients in the critical care units as well as on the wards. They will focus on general surgery, trauma and critical care, and emergency surgery. They will be assigned to cover emergency general surgery and trauma call no more than twice per week. In the second three-month period, they will gain high-volume experience on the subspecialty rotations that they desire—based on past experience and their future practice needs. During these rotations, the TTP Associate will continue to take call for emergency general surgery and trauma at Gundersen Health in La Crosse. During the final six months, the TTP Associate will be assigned to rotations in several of the following locations: Prairie du Chien, WI; Viroqua, WI; Decorah, IA; Tomah, WI; and Black River Falls, WI. The TTP Associate will be required to attend Journal Club (monthly) and Surgery morbidity and mortality (M&M) conference (weekly). The M&M conference is available by distance learning when assigned to regional sites.

The degree of autonomy will be commensurate with the past experience and proven skill level of the TTP Associate. As we are able to assess these skills directly, the TTP Associate will move from direct supervision, to indirect supervision, to independent practice. An attending surgeon will be assigned to be available throughout the entire duration of the program.
