The Junior Associate will participate in general surgery, acute care surgery, minimally invasive surgery, colon-rectal, surgical oncology, breast, vascular, thoracic, plastic surgery, and endoscopy cases. The Junior Associate will participate in the management of our SICU patients. In-house call will be approximately every six nights. The key elements of the program will be mentoring, education, and greater responsibility leading to autonomy and confidence in the management of general surgery cases both in and out of the operating room.
The Junior Associate schedule will complement existing educational programs to provide as much experience as possible. The Junior Associate will interact with and mentor other fellows and residents daily and be involved in their ongoing surgical education. The entire year will be spent at Queens Hospital Center. It is a 400-bed, New York City public teaching hospital affiliated with Mt. Sinai Medical School. Each year, 2000 surgery department cases are performed and 20,000 surgery clinic visits are conducted per year.
The Junior Associate will participate in general surgery, acute care surgery, minimally invasive surgery, colon-rectal, surgical oncology, breast, vascular, thoracic, plastic surgery, and endoscopy cases. Junior Associate will participate in the management of our SICU patients. In-house call will be approximately every six nights. Queens Hospital Center is not a designated Level 1 trauma center and therefore the department only manages walk-in trauma. Bariatric, cardiac, transplant, pediatric surgery, or robotic surgery procedures are not performed. At Queens Hospital Center, the experiences will be both elective and emergent with an eye toward providing any additional experience the Junior Associate may need.
Junior Associates will complete an intake assessment as well as a focused professional practice evaluation for a review of both procedures and cases.
The Junior Associate will be prepared to become comfortable and independent in the operating room and develop skills suited for either an academic or private practice career in general surgery. The Junior Associate will be in a mentored environment and will be encouraged to build their fund of knowledge in order to pass their qualifying and certifying exams in order to obtain board certification in general surgery.
Department quality improvement projects and patient safety initiatives will be discussed with the Junior Associate by the Senior Associate. Billing and collections questions the Junior Associate may have will be answered by our hospital finance and billing department.
Activities include weekly M&M Conference, weekly Tumor Board Conference, one week off to attend a CME conference or review course, and a $1,000 departmental stipend will be given toward CME activity per year. Medical liability questions the Junior Associate may have will be answered by our Risk Management/Legal department.
The Program Chief will meet monthly with the Junior Associate to give feedback on their ongoing performance to date. The Program Chief and Senior Associate will meet with the Junior Associate mid-year and give an assessment of their progression and performance.
The Program Chief and Senior Associate will meet with the Junior Associate at the end of the academic year and give a final assessment of their overall performance. The Junior Associate’s new practice environment will also be discussed, and a future career plan will be developed.
