Requirements for Members

A Member of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators™ must be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) who is a nationally or internationally recognized master surgeon educator, and who is committed to:

  • Actively participating in activities of the Academy
  • Identifying and implementing megatrends in surgical education and training
  • Steering the future directions in the field
  • Serving as a nationally or internationally recognized mentor
  • Spearheading, supporting, and championing innovation
  • Fostering exchange of creative ideas within and across disciplines
  • Promoting collaboration among surgical educators and other professionals
  • Supporting development and recognition of faculty
  • Exploring new education and training opportunities within the rapidly changing milieu of health care

Selection Criteria—National or International Recognition

The following criteria will be used in selecting candidates for Membership in the Academy. The unique contributions of candidates across these domains will be evaluated through rigorous peer review. The portfolio of educational achievements and contributions (via completion of an online application), curriculum vitae, biosketch, and personal statement from the candidate will be reviewed, in addition to supporting information, which includes letters of reference. Members will be expected to have made significant contributions in some or all of the following areas.

Established Record

  • A nationally or internationally recognized surgeon educator
  • An effective mentor to other leaders in surgery or surgical education, helping them ascend to key leadership positions

Current Contributions

  • Provide a description of your current position and/or efforts as they relate to surgical education


  • Leadership positions in national or international professional organizations
  • Leadership of national or international committees
  • Leadership positions in surgical education at his or her home institution
  • Impact on multidisciplinary, interprofessional, or transprofessional education


  • Sustained record of scholarship in surgical education, focusing on one or more of the following domains:
    • Scholarship of discovery
    • Scholarship of integration
    • Scholarship of application
    • Scholarship of teaching (Boyer, Carnegie Foundation, 1990)
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals that have advanced the field of surgical education and training
  • Development and implementation of innovative surgical education and training models that have received national or international acclaim
  • Recipient of major national grants in surgical education and training or grants focusing on other surgical fields that have provided opportunities to nurture generations of investigators and national leaders

Recognition and Awards

  • Recipient of major awards from national or international professional organizations for accomplishments in surgical education and training
  • Service as a visiting professor in surgery or surgical education at national or international academic institutions


  • Demonstrated role as a successful mentor
