Posted July 14, 2020

The American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators has been developing several virtual educational programs to provide surgeons and surgical trainees with important resources to address learning needs during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the vision that these virtual programs will continue to be offered beyond the pandemic and topics will address both clinical and nonclinical domains. One such program, the Academy’s Grand Rounds Series, is scheduled to launch this week. Another new program will be the Academy’s Fireside Chat Series. Both programs have been developed by the Subcommittee on Novel Teaching and Assessment Methods and Educational Resources, chaired by Mohsen Shabahang, MD, PhD, FACS. Like in-person fireside chats, attendees will drive the conversation and engage informally with the speaker, asking questions on a wide range of topics.

The inaugural chat will take place 7:00–8:00 pm Central time, July 23, and hosted by John D. Mellinger, MD, FACS, J. Roland Folse, MD Endowed Chair in Surgery, vice-chair of the department of surgery, and professor and chair of general surgery, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Carbondale. Dr. Mellinger, who also serves as chair of the American Board of Surgery, will discuss pursuit of careers in surgery and share valuable advice and personal experiences, including important opportunities gained from missteps. Surgeons, surgical trainees, and medical students all are invited to attend the Fireside Chat Series, which will be offered at no cost. Register for the chat.
