Accreditation Review Committee for AEI

The Accreditation Review Committee for the American College of Surgeons Program of Accredited Education Institutes (AEI) consists of Fellows of the College who have expertise in various aspects of skills education and training, in addition to directing their own centers. The members of the committee are appointed by the College and will serve a term of three years, with an option for reappointment for a second three-year term. The committee meets twice a year to make accreditation decisions. In addition, as needed, the Committee will evaluate the effectiveness of the overall ACS Program for the AEI. The purpose of the Accreditation Review Committee is to review the data and information submitted in the application and gathered from the site surveyors. The Accreditation Review Committee will make the overall accreditation decision, determining whether an institution that submits an application meets the criteria for accreditation as a Comprehensive or Focused Institute.

ACSPA-SurgeonsPAC Board

An initial and major component of the American College of Surgeons Professional Association's (ACSPA) expanded advocacy efforts is the formation of a political action committee, the ACSPA-SurgeonsPAC. Governed by an appointed Board of Directors and funded through voluntary contributions from ACSPA members and other eligible contributors, SurgeonsPAC establishes relationships and helps elect and re-elect U.S. House and Senate candidates to Congress, particularly health professionals who advocate for important ACS priorities that affect the surgical profession and surgical patients.

Commission on Cancer

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922, the multidisciplinary Commission on Cancer (CoC) establishes standards to ensure quality, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive cancer care delivery in health care settings; conducts surveys in health care settings to assess compliance with those standards; collects standardized data from CoC-accredited health care settings to measure cancer care quality; uses data to monitor treatment patterns and outcomes and enhance cancer control and clinical surveillance activities; and develops effective educational interventions to improve cancer prevention, early detection, cancer care delivery, and outcomes in health care settings.

Commission ship comprises 103 individuals who are either surgeons representing the College or organization representatives from the 59 national and professional organizations affiliated with the commission. The activities of the Commission are coordinated through the Accreditation, Advocacy, Cancer, Education, Executive, Organization Steering, Nominating, and Quality Integration Committees.

General Surgery Coding and Reimbursement Committee

The General Surgery Coding and Reimbursement Committee (GSCRC) represents and acts in the interests of general surgeons and their clinical practices regarding issues that impact coding, billing, and reimbursement for surgical care. The GSCRC focuses on activities of the American Medical Association/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) and the Current Procedural Terminology Editorial Panel (CPT), which are responsible for determining payment rates for health care services. In addition to RUC and CPT, the GSCRC also handles a variety of other payment policy issues including those related to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and other regulations, private insurer issues, administrative burden reduction, and practice management topics.

Committee for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) combined their respective metabolic and bariatric surgery accreditation programs into a single unified program to achieve one national accreditation standard for metabolic and bariatric surgery centers, the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). MBSAQIP works to advance safe, high-quality care for bariatric surgical patients through the accreditation of metabolic and bariatric surgical centers. A metabolic and bariatric surgical center achieves accreditation following a rigorous review process during which it proves that it can maintain certain physical resources, human resources, and standards of practice. All accredited centers report their outcomes to the MBSAQIP data registry. The Committee for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (CMBS) was established to provide support, guidance, and clinical expertise to the MBSAQIP.
