I would like to take this opportunity to update our American College of Surgeons (ACS) members who are vascular surgeons on the activities of your council and the projects we are working on with our colleagues at the College.

ACS Board of Regents Report

An outside consulting group, Weber Shandwick, has been engaged to help develop a global integrated communication strategy to improve communication with ACS Fellows. Updates on this strategy are forthcoming.

A new, more personalized version of NewsScopeMy ACS NewsScope—is now available. My ACS NewsScope provides users with individually tailored health-related, economic, and global health care content via an artificial intelligence algorithm based on user preferences.

Collaboration among ACS Divisions, Advisory Councils, and the Board of Governors are an ongoing priority, and to this end, joint meetings of the Advisory Council Pillars with the Board of Governor Pillars were held during the 2019 Leadership & Advocacy Summit, in Washington, DC. (The 2020 Leadership & Advocacy Summit will be held March 28-31.)

The Statement on Guidelines for the Ethical Use of Social Media by Surgeons was developed by the ACS Committee on Ethics and was approved by the Board of Regents at its February 2019 meeting in Chicago, IL. The guidelines, published in the May issue of the Bulletin, are intended to provide guidance for how surgeons can maintain an online presence while adhering to the ACS standards of professionalism.president of the Pennsylvania Neurosurgical Society.

Quality

A surgical quality verification program is being developed based on the standards recommended by the Optimal Resources for Surgical Quality and Safety (the Red Book). Site visits have been conducted at various hospitals to pilot test the program.

Vascular Surgeons in the News

Dr. Duwayi

Yazan Duwayri, MD, FACS, Atlanta, GA, is the 2019 ACS/Society for Vascular Surgery Health Policy Scholar. Dr. Duwayri participated in the Leadership Program in Health Policy and Management in June, which was presented by the Heller School of Brandeis University, Waltham, MA.

Andrea Obi, MD, Ann Arbor, MI, received the 2019 Wylie Scholar Award sponsored by the Society for Vascular Surgery Foundation for her work on Impact of bone marrow progenitor cells epigenetic memory on venous thrombus formation and resolution. Dr. Obi’s lab seeks to better understand how blood clots form in our veins, and the root causes of life-threatening conditions including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
