Women in Surgery Committee Seeks New Members

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Women in Surgery Committee (WiSC) is seeking candidates to fill five vacancies on the committee beginning in October 2018. Applications are due by May 31.

The committee’s mission is to enable women surgeons of all ages, specialties, and practice types to develop their individual potential as professionals; promote an environment that fosters inclusion, respect, and success; develop, encourage, and advance women surgeons as leaders; and provide a forum and networking opportunities to enhance women’s surgical career satisfaction.

Surgeons interested in advancing the role of women in the ACS and encouraging and mentoring women in surgery should apply. Nominations are open to both men and women, and the committee encourages representation by individuals of diverse cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.

Eligibility Requirements

Nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an active Fellow of the ACS representing one of the following specialties:
    • Thoracic/cardiac surgery
    • ENT, otolaryngology
    • Neurosurgery
    • Urology
    • Plastic surgery
    • General surgery
  • Be able to serve an initial three-year term: 2018–2021
  • Attend two in-person meetings annually (in April/May in conjunction with the ACS Leadership and Advocacy Summit in Washington, DC, and at the annual ACS Clinical Congress in October)
  • Actively serve on a minimum of one subcommittee
  • Contribute to committee initiatives
  • We are seeking Fellows from community practices as well as those that reside in the west and northwest.

  • Complete the online application
  • Upload a summary of your curriculum vitae (5 pages or less)
  • Upload a letter of interest highlighting your skills and expertise, along with contributions you would like to make to the committee

Submit your application by May 31.

Eligible candidates will be selected and notified by the committee in June, and will be invited to attend the October 22 WiSC meeting as guests. This meeting is held in conjunction with Clinical Congress 2018 in Boston, MA. Travel reimbursement will not be provided.
