Purpose
The Surgical Index (TSI) is dedicated to providing surgeons with an effective and efficient way to identify and stay up-to-date with the highest quality articles in the monthly journal literature, particularly those articles that are most relevant to their practices and clinical learning needs. Surgeons are able to scan the monthly selected titles, identify relevant topics and titles, review the abstracts, and decide whether to consult the full text articles for additional reading and possible application to practice. Monthly use of TSI and the associated links helps surgeons maintain a broad-based, current knowledge base in general surgery.
Accreditation
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
CME Credit
The American College of Surgeons designates this educational activity for a maximum of 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits (per abstract). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
The American Medical Association has determined that physicians who are not licensed in the US and participate in this CME activity are also eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
Requirements to Earn CME Credit
To be eligible for CME credit, learners must read an abstract identified as carrying credit, achieve a score of 100 percent (with unlimited attempts) on a short posttest, complete a brief evaluation form, and submit the results online. Upon electronic submission, a CME certificate will be available to print. The estimated time required to read the abstract and answer the questions is 30 minutes.
Release and Expiration Dates for CME Credit
Two abstracts selected for CME credit are to be released in each monthly issue of The Surgical Index, beginning with the February 2006 issue. Each abstract is certified for CME credit for a maximum of three years following its release in The Surgical Index (which is generally several months following the journal publication date). At the end of the month, three years following publication in The Surgical Index, the abstracts will no longer be certified for credit.

Disclosure Statement
The American College of Surgeons requires that all contributors on its educational activities disclose any material, financial, or other relationships that may pose conflicts of interest. (Required disclosures include any relationship between the contributors and any health care-related business, or other entity whose products or services may be discussed in, or directly affected in the marketplace by their presentation, that involves a financial interest through ownership of stock, stock options, or bonds, or the receipt of $1,000 or more in cash, goods, or services within the current 12-month period through research grants, consulting fees, royalties, or a nonremunerative position of influence, such as participation as an officer, director, or consultant.)
In addition, the fact that the presentation describes either the use of a device, product, or drug that is not FDA approved, or an off-label use of an approved device, product, or drug must also be disclosed. This policy has been adopted in response to FDA policy and recent case law involving medical societies.
The requirement for disclosure is not intended to imply any impropriety of such relationship but simply to identify such relationships through full disclosure and to allow the audience to form its own judgments regarding the subject matter presented. Disclosure by a contributor for an educational activity does not preclude the individual from participating in the activity; however, the nature of this relationship must be stated so that the audience may accurately evaluate statements made about the products or services involved.
