NTDB National Sample Project FAQ

What is NTDB NSP?

The NTDB National Sample project is a unique and powerful data base which includes clinical and resource information of a nationally representative sample of trauma incidents. NTDB NSP is a stratified sample based on NTDB data which is the largest aggregation of trauma registry data. Researchers can use the NTDB NSP to estimate national estimates of trauma care. The NTDB NSP excludes data elements that could directly or indirectly identify individuals or individual trauma centers.

What data elements are in NTDB NSP?

NTDB NSP includes more than 100 clinical and nonclinical variables for each hospital stay. Some of these are:

  • Admission and Discharge Status
  • Patient Demographics (e.g. gender, age, race)
  • Primary mechanism of injury code
  • Diagnosis codes (ICD-9 or AIS code)
  • Procedure codes
  • Injury Severity scores (ISS, GCS, FIM)
  • Outcome variables (e.g. Length of Stay, ICU days, payment)

A detailed description on each of the data elements in the NTDB NSP data base can be found in the User Manual for the NTDB NSP (120K PDF).

What years of data are available for NTDB NSP?

The NTDB NSP for 2003 includes more than 105,000 trauma incident records from 100 hospitals with admission year 2003. Data for admission year 2004, 2005 and 2006 are planned to be released in the near future.

How can the NTDB NSP be used?

The NTDB NSP can be used to provide nationally representative baseline measurements of trauma incidents, including:

  • Mortality rate
  • ISS scores
  • Length of Stay
  • Patient Demographics

Hardware and Software Requirements?

The NTDB NSP data set can be run on a computer with at least 60 MB of free space. In order to load and analyze the NTDB National Sample onto your computer, you will need about 60 MB of space available. There are a total of 18 data files. The files are in csv format (comma separated value), which can be easily imported to most statistical software.

SAS or Stata examples of analyzing the data?

Because the NTDB NSP is a stratified sample, proper statistical techniques must be used to calculate standard errors and confidence intervals. Below is an example of SAS source code and Stata source code for estimating proportion with appropriate confidence intervals and means with appropriate confidence interval.
