CME Instructions

A mandatory pretest is now required to earn CME credit for Selected Reading in General Surgery

Why is the pretest mandatory? The mandatory pretest is in response to criteria by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). These criteria state that education activities should result in positive changes in practice. Comparison of scores on the pretest and the posttest is an indicator of learning and change. This information is kept confidential and used for our reaccreditation process with the ACCME. It will not be part of your official transcript.

What other changes will I see? The biggest change is that you will be required to enter your ACS-SRGS user name and password to access the test. This step will ensure credit is awarded immediately after submission. Your username can be found on the address label and on your annual renewal notice. Your password is your last name, unless you have changed your password in the ACS members-only web portal.

Five advantages of the new online test site:

  1. Each question answered is saved so that you can come back to the test at the point you left it if you are called away.
  2. As soon as you finish a test, CME credit is automatically entered into an online transcript accessible from the test index page, where you can download certificates. This new feature applies to nonmembers as well. If you are an ACS member, you can also access your online transcript (My CME) at www.efacs.org.
  3. You are given two attempts to answer the question correctly. On your third attempt, the answer is revealed. This new approach facilitates learning without emphasizing a score. We believe this is a better way to learn the material presented.
  4. Completion of both the pre- and posttest are needed to earn credit. There is no longer a minimum percentage correct required. Again, the SRGS CME test is a self-assessment tool intended to foster life-long learning.
  5. You will have 12 months to complete all the tests in your subscription year. There are a maximum of 80 credits available each subscription year.
