A Mentored Surgical Outcomes Research Fellowship and Masters Degree
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has developed a two-year clinical fellowship in outcomes research. The ACS has one position available every year for a surgical resident who has completed at least two clinical years of training and is a US citizen.

Mission
The mission of the American College of Surgeons' Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care is to improve the quality of surgical care by enabling all surgeons to apply the best scientific evidence available in all aspects of their daily practice with respect, compassion, and dignity for all patients.
Vision
The American College of Surgeons' Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care will promote the practice of evidence-based surgery by developing new knowledge through basic and clinical research and by seeking the best-known scientific work.
Goals
- To develop and maintain an easily accessible repository of the highest quality scientific information to support surgical care.
- To encourage and facilitate clinical research especially prospective randomized clinical trials.
- To encourage and facilitate the work of surgeon/scientists in the laboratory.
- To develop surgical practice guidelines or standards supported by the best evidence.
- To encourage application of practices of proven value
- To discourage application of practices of no proven value.
- To improve the quality of surgical care by applying statistically rigorous, validated, risk-adjusted measurement of outcomes.
- To promote safety in surgical care by careful investigation of human factors and system factors that contribute to errors.
- To foster effective collaboration with the Divisions of Education, Advocacy and Health Policy, and Member Services.
- To foster effective collaboration with the public, government, and the corporate sector.
