AMA Foundation Honors ACS Resident Member as a Leader in Medicine
Awori Hayanga, MD, a resident member of the American College of Surgeons and the 2007 recipient of the American College of Surgeons Resident Leadership Award, has been named a recipient of the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation’s 2008 Leadership Award. This award provides medical students, residents/fellows, early career physicians, and established physicians from around the country with special training to develop their skills as future leaders in organized medicine and community affairs.
Dr. Hayanga is a fourth-year general surgery resident at the University of Michigan, Ypsilanti. He took a year off from his residency after being awarded a joint Alfred Sommer and World Health Organization World Alliance for Patient Safety Scholarship to pursue a master's in public health with a focus on health policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Hayanga is the co-founder of the Ruben J. Williams Foundation, a 501c(3) organization extending the scope of African surgical enterprise, networking and collaboration.
The AMA Foundation honored 56 individuals with the award at its annual Excellence in Medicine Awards ceremony in late March in Washington, DC. Presented in association with the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, the award recognizes recipients for demonstrating outstanding non-clinical leadership skills in advocacy, community service, and education.
