American College of Surgeons Press Briefing Wednesday, May 28, 2003 TODAY'S SPEAKERS J. Wayne Meredith, MD, FACS, is a national leader in trauma surgery. He is professor and chairman of the department of general surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston-Salem, NC, and he also serves as director of surgical sciences, director of burn services, and the general surgery residency program director at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Meredith is Chair of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, and president of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He is a member of the board of directors of the American Foundation for Trauma, and the board of advisors for the Trauma Information Exchange program of the American Trauma Society. Dr. Meredith is also a member of the American Surgical Association, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Halsted Society, and the Southeastern Surgical Association. He earned his MD degree at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and completed residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, in Winston-Salem. In 1986, he completed a fellowship in trauma/critical care at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital, Portland. John Fildes, MD, FACS, FCCM, is the medical director of the trauma center at University Medical Center, Las Vegas, NV. He has been practicing trauma medicine for 14 years, and is actively involved in epidemiological research. Dr. Fildes' research includes studies on trauma and maternal mortality. He has also acted as principle investigator in grants for studies involving data linking and data integration, which analyzed crash outcome data, domestic violence, suicide patterns, and state injury patterns. Dr. Fildes is a member of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. He is also a member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American Burn Association, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Dr. Fildes earned his MD degree from the University of Santo Tomas, in Manila, the Philippines.
