Description: Approximately 1.4 billion people live in poverty globally.  A third of diseases in developing countries are potentially treatable by surgery. Surgical disease represents a substantial global burden of disease.  There is an enormous unmet need of surgical care for the developing countries. Surgeons in the U.S. can play a pivotal role in addressing the above burden via volunteerism.

Title: When Are You Off the Learning Curve? Graduating Residents and Experienced Surgeons Doing New Things

Description: This Town Hall Meeting will focus on the issues of surgical readiness of new surgeons and surgeons learning new procedures.  This will be an open forum for surgeons to share their experiences and best practices on (1) adopting new procedures personally and (2) evaluating new graduates for readiness to do procedures independently.

Title: I Think I Might Get Sued!: Now What?

Description: What are the necessary steps to take if you think you will be sued - starting with documentation, verification from other staff, role of individual, or role of the hospital? Who's legally responsible? When must legal representation be retained? If suit does not go through, what lessons are to be learned? Are prompt apologies useful? Dealing with your own emotions; preparing for a records review - state agency or surgery board?
