Advocacy Work Group

GOAL: To represent the needs of young physicians within the College's legislative agenda
OBJECTIVES
- To represent the YFA as liaisons to appropriate College, PAC, and Board of Governor committees
- To share a leadership role with the other Work Groups in the curriculum development, marketing, and implementation of the annual ACS Leadership Conference for Young Surgeons in Washington, DC
- To market and support the Joint Surgical Advocacy Conference annually in Washington DC
- To represent the YFA and ACS at the AMA Young Physicians' Section annual and interim meetings
Communications Work Group
Chair: Laurel Soot, MD, FACS lsoot@orclinic.org
GOAL: Increase the awareness and involvement in the YFA among Young Fellows, Associate Fellows, and Initiates by improving the College's communication with these groups of ACS members
OBJECTIVES
- Prepare and distribute a quarterly electronic newsletter
- Increase awareness of the Initiates program at Clinical Congress
- Increase awareness of YFA at Clinical Congress
- Develop and implement a mode of communication between individual YFA members and Initiates in order to share specific concerns with the appropriate YFA work group or work group member
- Improve communications with ACS chapters and encourage them to have at least one Young Surgeon representative in a leadership position
- Increase awareness of YFA among RAS members
Education Work Group
Chair: Steven Chen, MD, FACS schenmd@gmail.com
OBJECTIVES
- Share with the other Work Groups in the development of education programs presented at the Leadership Conference and Clinical Congress
- Inform Young Fellows of educational resources via multiple sources e.g., Portal, e-Newsletter, and so forth
- Survey YFA members as needed to obtain demographic data, i.e., who they are, and where and what they are doing, and report the findings in ACS publications
- Work with the ACS Foundation to develop a Travel Award opportunity for Young Fellows to visit other Young Surgeon groups around the world
- Seek official liaison appointments to ACS committees and ad hoc groups that influence and affect education programs, products, and services for Young Fellows
Member Services Work Group

GOALS: Increase awareness of the ACS and its benefits among young Fellows and promote programs and initiatives that serve the needs of young Fellows; provide a voice for young Fellows at all levels of the College, in all types of practice, throughout the country and the world
OBJECTIVES
- Produce and keep current a presentation outlining benefits of ACS fellowship to young surgeons
- Host a forum for young Fellows at the annual Clinical Congress
- Share in the development of education programs presented at the Leadership Conference and Clinical Congress
- Provide assistance to the local chapters’ YFA representative in building their local program by serving as a clearinghouse of ideas to be shared with local chapters
- Maintain a database of active young Fellows and their specific areas of interest in the College, and engage these Fellows in projects that utilize their energy and talent to further the needs of the College
- Survey all young Fellows in the College to identify areas of interest or need
- Use the above information to develop programs directed at improving Initiate numbers and improving young Fellow retention and tracking, and report these outcomes over time
- Serve as young-surgeon liaisons to all College governing bodies and standing committees
- Establish a program to maintain contact with international Fellows, age 45 and younger, who express interest in participating in the activities of the ACS, and encourage their participation in regular YFA and ACS programs
