The ACS Archives

Highlights from the Archives of the American College of SurgeonsThe ACS Archives documents and preserves the history of the College through the records it has produced since it was established in 1913. It comprises approximately 300 linear feet of materials including paper records and bound materials, film, video, audio tapes of oral histories, photos and photo albums, and other artifacts.

In January 2001, the College hired a full time Project Archivist to establish an Archives program and to begin the accessioning, processing and cataloging of the records into an online system. Most of the historic records have been processed and are available for legitimate research. Access to the Archives for research purposes is a member benefit. Members wishing to do research in the Archives can make contact by voice or e-mail to set up an appointment. All others wishing to do research in the ACS Archives should submit a written request detailing all contact information and the purpose of the research.

In May 2005, the College began compiling a digital archive of some of it's cornerstone historical photos and documents, which are now regularly presented as a "Highlight of the Month" from the American College of Surgeons Archives. This feature is found in the online section: Highlights from the Archives of the American College of Surgeons.

See "Fees and use policy".
