The Triological Society and the American College of Surgeons

Clinical Scientist Development Award Guidelines

November, 2008

Note:  Change in eligibility and new submission deadline - April 15, 2009

The Triological Society (TRIO) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) announce a competitive research career development program that will provide supplemental funding to otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons who receive NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Awards (K08) or Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Development Awards (K23).

Purpose
The TRIO and ACS are offering these awards as a means to facilitate the research career development of otolaryngologists-head and neck surgeons, with the expectation that awardees will have sufficient pilot data to submit a competitive R01 proposal prior to the conclusion of the K awards.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be MD otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons and members of the American College of Surgeons.  Applicants must meet all requirements as set forth in the K08 and K23 application criteria and must be recipients of a new K08 or K23 award or have an existing K08/K23 award with a minimum of three years remaining in the funding period as of June, 2009.

Mechanism of Support
Awards will use the K08 or K23 mechanisms. Planning, direction, and execution of the program will be the responsibility of the candidate and her/his mentor on behalf of the applicant institution. The project period will be for a period of up to five years with a minimum of three years. Awards are not renewable.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

Environment:  The institution must have a well-established research and clinical career development program and qualified faculty in clinical and basic research to serve as mentors. The institution must be able to demonstrate a commitment to the development of the awardee as a productive, independent investigator. The awardee, mentor and institution must be able to describe a multi-disciplinary career development program that will maximize the use of relevant research and educational resources.

Program: The award may provide three to five consecutive 12-month awards. At least 75 percent of the recipient's full-time professional effort must be devoted to the program and the remainder devoted to other clinical and teaching pursuits consistent with the objectives of the award.

Mentor(s): The recipient must receive appropriate mentoring throughout the program.

Allowable Cost

TRIO and ACS will provide salary and fringe benefits for the NIH K08/K23 recipient. A combined total of $80,000 per year in direct costs will be awarded to the institution of the awardee.

The institution may supplement the salary of the recipient up to a level that is consistent with the institution's salary scale. Institutional supplementation of salary must not require extra duties or responsibilities that would interfere with the purpose of the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award.

TRIO and ACS will not reimburse indirect costs or institutional overhead.
