American College of Surgeons Co-Sponsored K08/K23 NIH Supplement Awards

The American College of Surgeons announces a program that will provide supplemental funding for individuals who receive a Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (K08/K23) through the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This program is intended for surgeon-scientists working in the early stages of their research careers. The award requires cosponsorship with a participating surgical society of a three-, four-, or five-year period of supervised research experience that may integrate didactic studies with laboratory or clinically based research.

This award program will help to facilitate the career development of individuals pursuing careers in surgical research by enhancing salary support over and above that offered by the K08/K23 mechanism. Applications are due by October 12, 2011, the same as the NIH deadline, with funding to begin July 1, 2012. Awardees must be members in good standing of both the American College of Surgeons and a cosponsoring surgical society. Participating surgical societies include American Vascular Association and Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education.

Applicants must submit a copy of the completed NIH application and must advise the ACS Scholarships Administrator of the NIH’s decision regarding their application.

In some cases, applicants who were awarded a K08/K23 previously and who have a minimum of three years of research remaining may also apply for this award.

In some cases, successful applicants to comparable programs offered by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research may be eligible to participate.

For further details, please contact the ACS Scholarships Administrator at kearly@facs.org.
