Welcome to the Online Guide to Choosing a Surgical Residency
developed by the Committee on Medical Student Education. Although this section of the American College of Surgeons Web site provides comprehensive information and links
to other sites that might be helpful to students of any age considering a career in surgery, it has been targeted to the specific interests of medical students who are interested in pursuing a surgical residency.

The Online Guide includes information about
surgery and surgical specialties as a career. Not only does this guide outline what the specialty
entails as far as a career path; it covers what the implications are for your personal
life as well. Whenever possible, we have included data to back up
our perceptions. For medical students, we provide suggestions
for electives,
important activities to participate in during medical school,
information on suggested
readings, and other
resources. You will also find a list of frequently
asked questions, and a section on how to get involved in
organized medicine in general, and the ACS
in particular. We provide guidelines on how to establish a surgery interest
group.
Choosing
a residency program is always a topic of discussion for third and fourth
year medical students. Visit our section on the topic to
get tips from the actual programs. We also have a section on
preparing
a personal statement and how to ace your interview.
Finally, visit the section entitled "So, You Want to Be a Surgeon," an online database developed to help medical students find and match with the best possible surgical residency.
Beyond residency, we have information on post
residency fellowships and a link to the ACS job and research
databanks. We have links
to other sites wherein you will find important information
on residency applications and specific information about schools.
Wherever possible, we have provided links to surgery residency
programs.
