A Brief History of JACS
The Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS) has been publishing information for surgeons since July 7, 1905 (originally called Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics [SG&O], and originally priced at $5/year). Begun by Dr. Franklin Martin, a gynecologist from Wisconsin, JACS included articles, abstracts, book reviews, editorials, and, in the beginning, society news. In 1910 all subscribers to the publication were invited to gather in Chicago as a kind of travel club to observe and study surgery first hand. In 1911 a permanent organization was proposed, and by 1913 the American College of Surgeons began. JACS is the official scientific publication of the American College of Surgeons. Today, JACS focuses on original work of clinical relevance.
