James C. ThompsonA native Texan, Dr. Thompson was born in San Antonio. He earned his MD and MA in anatomy and endocrinology from the University of Texas at Galveston. He completed his internship in Galveston, and then served his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was appointed assistant professor of surgery in 1961. In 1963, he began serving as chief of surgery at Harbor General Hospital, and as associate professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); he was promoted to UCLA professor in 1967. Between 1970 and 1995 Dr. Thompson was chief of surgery and professor and chair of the department of surgery at the University of Texas School of Medicine, where he currently has a dual academic appointment as Ashel Smith Professor of Surgery and professor in the department of physiology and biophysics.

Dr. Thompson holds memberships in numerous societies and organizations; he is the current President of the American College of Surgeons, and was awarded its Distinguished Service Award in 1996. He has served as president of the American Surgical Association (1991-1992), the Society for Surgical Chairmen (1992-1994), the Southern Surgical Association (1995), and the Texas Surgical Society (1992-1993); he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award of the Surgical Section of the National Medical Association in 1995, and the Distinguished Service Award of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons in 2000.

Dr. Thompson serves on several editorial boards, and between 1970 and 1996, was invited as a visiting professor more than 200 times, including travel to prestigious medical educational institutions in Paris, Stockholm, Japan, Hungary, China, Papua New Guinea, and Seoul, among others. His professional interest is gastrointestinal hormones.

In 2000, Dr. Thompson received an honorary MD from the University of Lund, Sweden, and was elected to the American Philosophical Society.
