Loyal Davis (1938 - 1982)

Loyal Davis was born in Galesburg, Illinois in 1896; he attended Knox College there before going to Northwestern. At Northwestern he earned his MD, and later, an MS, and a PhD. During his long and distinguished career he held major positions in the medical community and was widely honored for contributions in the field of neurosurgery.

Dr Davis held the Chair of the Department of Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School for 31 years, and was Chief of the surgery division of Passavant Memorial Hospital. He served as Chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons, and as President of the ACS in 1962-63; he was President of the Chicago Surgical Society in 1945-46, the American Surgical Association in 1957, and was a founding member of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Neurosurgery, and the Halsted Club.

Dr Davis became an associate editor of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons in 1927, and was Editor in Chief from 1938 until 1982, a total of 55 dedicated years. He was the author of many books, including several novels, and at least 180 additional articles in surgery.

Dr Davis died in 1982.
