Murray F. Brennan, MD, FACS
Associate Editor

Dr. Brennan was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and received a degree in mathematics from the University of New Zealand and a medical degree from the University of Otago in 1964; his interest in physiology and surgery began at this point in the laboratory. In 1970, he began advanced laboratory and clinical work with Francis D. Moore, MD, FACS, at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Harvard Medical School and with George F. Cahill Jr., MD at the Joslin Research Laboratories. Encouraged and supported in his interest in nutrition and metabolism, Dr. Brennan made a major commitment to laboratory and clinical investigation.

After residency at the Brigham, Dr. Brennan joined Steven Rosenberg, MD, FACS, at the National Cancer Institute where he was head of the surgical metabolism section. In 1981, Dr. Brennan joined Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as chief of gastric and mixed tumor service; from 1985 until 2006, he was chair of the department of surgery.

He is a member of innumerable academic surgical societies, national committees, and editorial boards; his published scientific papers focus on surgical oncology, endocrinology, metabolism, and nutrition. He has designed and conducted prospective clinical trials that have produced major findings for the management of soft tissue sarcoma and peripancreatic cancer. His major interests are the evaluation of cancer therapy and training young surgeons.

In 2000 Dr. Brennan received the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Surgeons. He has also been named as an honorary fellow in many of the surgical colleges throughout the world.
