Technical Skills Education in Surgery

Promoting Excellence in Surgical Care Through Education, Training, and Validation

E-Learning Resource Center

CME Program

Purpose and Objectives

The purpose of the Web-based Resource, Technical Skills Education in Surgery, is to provide surgical trainees and educators an up-to-date, comprehensive, easily accessible resource that can be used to improve surgery technical skills education and research. Users will be able to easily access the annotated bibliography of high quality articles in the surgery technical skills literature that includes a critical review of the article; a classification based on the research design, type of simulator, and the Kirkpatrick hierarchy; and an abstract of the article. After completing reading assignments, learners will be able to describe important principles related to learning curves, assessment, simulation, and application of educational theory in technical skills education.

Accreditation

The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CME Credit

The American College of Surgeons designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The American Medical Association has determined that physicians who are not licensed in the U.S. and participate in this CME activity are also eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Disclosure Information

In order to comply with the Updated Standards for Commercial Support defined by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the ACS has implemented a disclosure process to ensure that anyone in a position to control the content of an educational activity has disclosed all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest. A commercial interest is defined as any proprietary entity producing health care goods or services, with the exemption of non-profit or government organizations and non-health care related companies. Financial relationships are those relationships in which the individual benefits by receiving a salary, royalty, intellectual property rights, consulting fee, honoraria, ownership interest (e.g., stocks, stock options or other ownership interest, excluding diversified mutual funds), or other financial benefit. Financial benefits are usually associated with roles such as employment, management position, independent contractor (including contracted research), consulting, speaking and teaching, membership on advisory committees or review panels, board membership, and other activities from which remuneration is received or expected. The ACCME considers “relevant” financial relationships as financial transactions (in any amount) that may create a conflict of interest and occur within the 12 months preceding the time that the individual is being asked to assume a role controlling content of the educational activity.

The ACCME standards also require that ACS manage any reported conflict and eliminate the potential for bias. The planning committee and faculty for this educational activity have been contacted and any conflicts have been managed. However, participants perceiving a bias are requested to please report the circumstances on the evaluation form.

Faculty have also been advised that it is their responsibility to disclose if they will be describing the use of a device, product, or drug that is not FDA approved or the off-label use of an approved device, product, or drug or unapproved usage.

The requirement for disclosure is not intended to imply any impropriety of such relationships, but simply to identify such relationships through full disclosure, and to allow the audience to form its own judgments regarding the presentation.
