ABOUT SURGICAL M+M AND PATIENT SAFETY

The Division of Education of the American College of Surgeons has developed this online educational resource focusing on the Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) conference for today's practicing surgeon. The M&M conference has been a critical component of the educational and quality assurance activities of surgery departments for many years. However, the format of the conference has not changed much over time. The M&M conference has assumed even greater importance in the recent past with the sharp focus on medical/surgical errors, near misses, and systems-based practice. A number of institutions have made changes in the format of the M&M conference to address the new needs and imperatives. However, at many institutions, the M&M conference remains fairly traditional in its format. The College would like to facilitate sharing information between institutions about new, innovative, and effective ways of conducting the M&M conference. We have developed this peer-reviewed, Web-based, mini-journal as a method for sharing ideas across institutions. The peer review process will ensure that the articles are of high quality and general interest. We envision a brief article or commentary being posted every one to two months, and possibly more frequently as the project evolves. Articles might be summaries of work published elsewhere, brief review articles, or descriptions of effective techniques (eg, "how we do it.")

Gerald B. Healy, MD, FACS and David W. Roberson, MD, FACS have agreed to serve as Co-Editors of this Web-based journal. Members of the Editorial Board include Richard J. Gusberg, MD, FACS, James C. Hebert, MD, FACS, and Donald Risucci, PhD.

We hope you find this new section of the American College of Surgeons Web site helpful and look forward to your comments and suggestions.
