Minimizing Liability and Enhancing Surgical Outcomes Through Effective Communication
This course will be offered in the spring of 2009.
Findings from a recent ACS analysis of closed claims found that communication was a determining factor in many of the suits filed. These findings about problem-prone patterns and common pitfalls in communication are the basis for a course entitled “Minimizing Liability and Enhancing Surgical Outcomes through Effective Communication.” The course, developed by the ACS Division of Education, will help surgeons to successfully accomplish the commonplace tasks most often associated with litigation, as well as to deal with anger, mistrust, aggression, adverse outcomes, errors, and other difficult situations. Gender communication, cultural sensitivities, electronic communication, leadership communication, and acting as a communication resource for other surgeons will also be addressed. Participants will have the opportunity to apply their skills and receive personalized feedback.
