Committee on Medical Student Education

(Formerly the Subcommittee on Medical Student Education)

Goals of the Committee on Medical Student Education:

  • To address comprehensively the educational needs in surgery for medical students during all four years of medical school
  • To support educational efforts that facilitate the transition from medical school to residency training
  • To play a pivotal role in developing and implementing new and innovative educational programs to address general competencies in the third-year surgery clerkships and fourth-year rotations
  • To make available a spectrum of innovative educational programs and materials to the medical students
  • To establish a national mentoring program for medical students to complement mentoring available within the respective schools
  • To promote and support surgery interest groups at various medical schools
  • To provide helpful information and guidance to medical students interested in surgical careers
  • To facilitate the involvement of medical students in the educational activities of the American College of Surgeons
  • To support the involvement of surgery faculty members in the medical school curricula of all four years
  • To support efforts to recruit the best candidates to medical school
  • To work closely with other organizations to achieve the optimum educational outcomes
  • To monitor the outcomes of educational programs
