Foreword
Issues Relating to Restrictions on the Duty Hours of Surgery Residents
The Residency Assist Page of the Division of Education aims to address a spectrum of issues that are of interest to residency programs and provides solutions to many challenges in residency education. Specific areas of focus include innovative education and training, use of simulation and strategies to address restrictions on resident duty hours. The goal is to offer program directors and faculty with tools to provide the best education and training to residents and the highest quality for surgical care.
Debra A. DaRosa, PhD, serves as the editor of this online publication, and is supported by the RAP Editorial Board. The Board has been specially assembled to represent a variety of surgical specialties and several regions of the country.
Editorials accompanied by selected references, examples of practical solutions, and reactions to the topics covered in previous columns will be posted on this section of the ACS website at regular intervals. The responses to questions posed by program directors will be provided by the editor. The goal is not to be prescriptive, but to offer helpful suggestions that may be adapted to meet the specific needs of individual programs. Also, links to the ACGME website will be provided to make available the most current information regarding the ACGME's requirements.
We hope that surgery program directors and others involved with the education of surgery residents find this Web-based information helpful. Please send your questions, suggestions, or comments to me at asachdeva@facs.org
