Personal Financial Planning and Management for Residents and Young Surgeons
The American College of Surgeons presents the ACS Financial Management Course for residents and surgeons recently in practice, which uses an interactive / lecture format to arm surgeons with basic financial management skills. The course is designed to educate and equip young surgeons with the knowledge to manage their personal financial future, including debt management, preparation for significant life events (such as retirement or college education of their children) and proper planning for financial stresses related to their surgical practice.
Objectives
At the end of the course, the participants will be able to understand:
- The essentials of personal financial management as they relate to young surgeons in practice and residents and their families
- The impact of interest rates and time upon loans, compound interest, and the implications for debt management
- The building blocks necessary for the surgeons to invest successfully
- The importance of time in reducing the risk of investing
- The basics of mutual funds, stocks, bonds, and other investment vehicles
- How to evaluate and choose a financial advisor
