As the largest international organization of surgeons, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) develops programs to advance our mission to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting the highest standards for surgical education and practice. The ACS Patient Education Program was initiated in 2005 to empower the public with knowledge and comprehensive training programs to help them make informed decisions and fully participate in all aspects of their surgical care. Our program recognizes the importance of patient-centered care and supports patients and their families as integral members of the surgical team in order to deliver optimum and safe surgical care. As listed in the ACS Statement on Principles of Patient Education, effective home management and quality of life after surgery requires patients to possess the knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to their care—and patient education is essential in this regard.
