Aims and Goals
The aim of the American College of Surgeons Program for Accreditation of Education Institutes is to identify, develop, and promote standards for quality education in order to:
- Support the efforts of surgeons, residents, medical students and other members of the surgical team in their continuing professional development efforts.
- Help surgeons, residents, medical students and other members of the surgical team acquire and maintain their knowledge and skills in surgery.
- Advance the science of surgery education.
- Create a system of support for the delivery of state of the art education at regional training centers.
- Promote patient safety through education.
Goals
- To create a network of accredited Education Institutes across the country to assist surgeons, residents, medical students, and other members of the surgical team in achieving the requisite knowledge and skills in order to provide optimal care to surgery patients.
- To provide surgeons, residents, medical students and other members of the surgical team requisite documentation for the verification of knowledge and skills.
- To offer opportunities for preceptorships to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills to the practice environment.
- To create regional learning communities to assist individual surgeons, residents, medical students, and other members of the surgical team in achieving their personal and continuous professional development goals.
- To conduct “train-the-trainer” courses and workshops.
- To pursue innovative research to advance surgical education.
