Issues in Surgical Ethics—A Selected SURGERY Journal article for CME Offering

SURGERY logoNOT EVERY DECISION REQUIRED OF A SURGEON is painted in black or white, nor do those decisions come down only to whether to operate, when to operate, and what operation to do. Ethical, cultural, ethnic, religious, and individual personal concerns and preferences—of the patient, the family, and the surgeon—come into play and may limit the degrees of freedom of choices. The concept of "Culturally competent care" has entered our lexicon and become a criterion of excellence in medical and nursing treatment. It is also an important element of  professionalism, one of the six competencies defined by the ACGME and mandated to be a component of graduate surgical education.  How to incorporate understanding of and sensitivity to the evolving ethical issues in surgical practice remains a challenge. How to demonstrate that ethical issues are taught to surgical residents and how to measure the penetration of that learning has been left largely to the energy and ingenuity of residency program directors.

The Editors of SURGERY, in partnership with the American College of Surgeons, are offering a quarterly series of ethical challenges embedded in clinical scenarios, which are based on actual clinical stories. We hope you find these presentations interesting and helpful. Practicing surgeons and surgical residents can earn CME credits for participating through reading the article and fulfilling CME requirements.
