About the Surgical Research Committee (SRC)
The Surgical Research Committee (SRC) is a standing committee of the Board of Regents. The Committee is concerned with, and represents the College in matters addressing the progress of academic surgery and the funding, content, and direction of surgical research as it pertains to improving the care of patients.
Members of the SRC are nominated by the founding organizations of the Conjoint Council on Surgical Research, a body existing in the 1980s to foster surgical research and formed into the SRC under the American College of Surgeons in 1989. These organizations, each appointing one member, are: the American College of Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Society of University Surgeons, and the Society of Surgical Chairs. Additional members, at large, are appointed by the Board of Regents and the Canadian Association of Surgical Chairs appoints a liaison member.
The SRC conducts a number of activities:
- Symposium at the Clinical Congress each year concerning topics on the frontier of surgical research
- Liaison to the National Institutes of Health regarding issues of importance to surgical research and peer review
- Surgical Investigators Conference - a biennial conference on Grantsmanship
- Clinical Trials Methods Course - a biannual course for surgeons engaged in clinical research
- Outcomes Research Course - a biannual course for clinical researchers and health services researchers.
The Surgical Research Committee welcomes your comments.
