| Description: |
Obesity is often associated with insulin resistance and significant cardiovascular morbidities. A large visceral fat mass or central obesity represents a major risk for development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular complications. Bariatric surgery is the only modality resulting in sustained weight loss and is usually associated with improvements in insulin resistance, reversal of hypertension, and improvements in various cardiovascular parameters. The degree of metabolic improvement following bariatric surgery varies greatly. Also weight loss after the surgery is not the sole mechanism behind metabolic improvements. |
