Emerging Developments in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Two research groups will report on emerging developments that show promise for treating patients with prostate cancer: one approach utilizes an anti-inflammatory agent and the second--a technological approach--employs the use of robotics.

Specialty Coverage in US Trauma Centers: Can Trauma Centers Survive?

Significant strides have been made toward improving the medical community's capability to treat severely injured patients. However, such strides are now being challenged in some areas due to the issue of specialty coverage in trauma centers. A national panel of trauma surgeons will provide reporters with an overview on the current state of subspecialty coverage in the emergency department, and examine how subspecialty coverage issues may jeopardize the Level I status of some trauma centers in the US.

3. PRESS CONFERENCE

Surgeons Develop Genetic Profiles for Head and Neck and Lung Cancer in Smokers

Researchers from three academic centers have developed genetic profiles from head and neck and lung cancer in smokers. They are working to use this information to predict if patients with lung masses have developed lung cancer or metastases from another source. The research group is making its genetic algorithms available to physicians throughout the world.

4. PRESS BRIEFING

Update on Bariatric Surgery

Henry Buchwald, MD, PhD, FACS, a nationally recognized bariatric surgeon, will meet with reporters to provide an update on bariatric surgery. Dr. Buchwald chairs the ACS postgraduate course Bariatric Surgery Primer, which focuses on the epidemiology, etiology, and incidence of morbid obesity, among other issues. He will also provide a timely update on just-published research findings.

5. PRESS BRIEFING

The Operating Room of the Future

A panel of medical experts will explore how emerging surgical technologies will impact the look and design of the OR in the future. Panelists will discuss current trends such as minimally invasive and image-guided surgery, but also offer some predictions on developments occurring within the next 10 years—including the emerging role of surgically-assisted robotics.
