WASHINGTON STATE CHAPTER
2000 ANNUAL MEETING
Dear chapter members,
Spring has come to the East side of the Cascades. As the days lengthen and your thoughts turn to sunshine and warm weather, think Chelan in June. The year 2000 Annual Meeting of the ACS will be held at Campbell's resort on June 22 through June 25 on beautiful Lake Chelan. We are a bit later this year and hopefully all the children will be finished with school. By holding the meeting on Thursday thru Sunday noon we hope to minimize time away from your practice.
There are several important forms I would like to call to your attention:
1. Final call for abstracts
2. Meeting registration form
3. Hotel Reservation form - enclosed in our spring mailing, call 800 885-8225The meeting will begin on Thursday evening with a lakeside ranch style barbecue. Dress will be casual but plan on a jacket as temperatures fall in the evening, particularly when there is a breeze. Dr. Nicole Gibran has developed an outstanding program for our meeting. The three-day scientific session starts on Friday with the traditional Harkin’s paper competition. Those papers will be discussed by our visiting professor, Dr. Keith Kelly, Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic. Many of you will probably recall that part of his training was at the University of Washington in Dr. Harkin’s lab. He will also present a lecture on Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
This year’s interactive cancer session begins on Saturday morning and will include an update on management of Pancreatic Cancer by Dr. Michael Hart followed by management of Metastatic liver cancer by Dr. Steven Curley. Dr. Curley directs the Surgical Oncology program at M.D. Anderson in Houston and is one of the two liver surgeons there.
In addition to papers from our members, I am working with Len Eddinger, legislative liaison for WSMA, to lead a discussion on how we individually and collectively can best influence our politicians who seem to effect our practices more each day. As this is an election year and we are facing great change in our profession, this presentation should provide needed information.
Friday afternoon will be the annual golf tournament at Desert Canyon under the direction of Ken Harris. Plan on no wind this year! We will have box lunches as part of the package to speed up the process. Friday evening there will be a Presidents Reception/Dessert Cruise on Lake Chelan leaving at 7:30 pm. returning at 9:45 PM. All attendees are invited, including children of all ages. The Lady of the Lake II is a large boat with plenty of enclosed space. Saturday afternoon is the Tennis tournament at Lake Chelan Shores under the direction of Herman Ansingh. That evening we will have our annual awards banquet followed by live music and entertainment. Childcare (ages 3-13) for the dessert cruise (if desired) and the awards banquet will be free. For younger children special care arrangements can be set up with Campbell’s Resort.
We hope that you and your families are able to join us for an educational and fun meeting. Information about other activities will be available on our web site. Check our WEB site for program information a few weeks after the abstract deadline. (http://www.facs.org/chapters/washington)
Special lodging rates have been arranged for the meeting. Please use the enclosed reservation form and contact Campbells by 1 May, 2000. IN ADDDITION TO GROUP RATES AND LODGING OPTIONS, RESERVATIONS MADE THROUGH THEM INDICATING YOU ARE WITH THE ACS HELPS THE CHAPTER MEET ITS LODGING QUOTA FOR THE MEETING AND THEREBY KEEPS OUR COSTS DOWN.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. I encourage you to submit an abstract. Also consider inviting a colleague who is not a member or who has not previously attended our meeting. It’s a great way to start the summer.
Sincerely,
Chris Stahler, M.D., FACS
