Why support the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American Colege of Surgeons?
Our chapter has endorsed the educational goals of the American College of Surgeons. Through the untiring work of both the Council and Young Surgeons Committee, the Metropolitan Washington Chapter has developed an educational program unparalleled by any other chapter in the country. In fact, because our service area covers a major metropolitan area rather than an entire state, it has been possible for our chapter to develop educational programs that span the entire year.
Starting each calendar year is the Basic Science Review Course, a one-day review course directed primarily at residents. It is also available to recertifying general surgeons. The course covers the basic science of six to nine topics and their relationship to surgical diseases.
In the spring, All Surgeons Day is a one-day conference that offers CME credit. This program allows the entire community-residents, attendings, and private practice surgeons-to ear outstanding updates on cutting-edge techniques and treatments. Two citywide Grand Rounds in the spring and fall provide CME and competitive presentations of challenging cases. The summer provides time for the Advanced Operative Strategies Course for all PGY-5s. It is a fresh cadaver course, in which chief residents perform advanced surgical techniques with local experts. This session affords an incredible operative experience in a non-stressful environment.
The Washington Academy of Surgery's Surgical Residents Competitive Forum allows trainees to present their work and benefits members by keeping them abreast of the best and exciting research being performed in out metropolitan area. In addition to the educational programs, social programs such as the Metropolitan Washington Chapter/Washington Academy of Surgery's Spring Dinner and the Young Surgeons' Fall Dinner are offered. All of these activities allow the surgical community to get together, communicate, and advance our individual fund of knowledge. These programs are the "added value benefit" to your practice of your participation and continued financial support of our chapter.
