SUMMER 1998 NEWSLETTER
Young Surgeons Committee Report
by Douglas J. Schwartzentruber, MD, FACS Chair, Young Surgeons Committee

We have an ambitious agenda for the 1998-1999 chapter year, with many of our programs focusing on resident education and fostering relationships between surgeons at the multiple institutions in the region. Planned events are as follows:

  1. Semi-annual All-City Grand Rounds continue. This program serves as a forum for interesting case presentations and audience participation in determining appropriate diagnoses and management techniques. The next All-City Grand Rounds will take place on September 12, 1998, at Children's National Medical Center. Residents from George Washington University and Georgetown University medical centers will present.

  2. On September 19, 1998, we will present the second Advanced Operative Strategies Course at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Directed by LTC Craig Shriver, MD, FACS, this hands-on surgical techniques course is designed for chief residents. The use of fresh cadavers and the guidance of expert surgeons in the city contribute to a highly successful course.

  3. The annual Young Surgeons' Fall Dinner will take place on Saturday, November 7, 1998, at the ArmyNavy Club. We are honored to have as our guest speaker Samuel A. Wells, MD, FACS, Director of the College. Kevin Hurtt, MD, FACS, and Giovana Thomas, MD, should be commended for coordinating efforts to find a location and entertainment for this black-tie event.

  4. The fourth annual Basic Science Review Course will take place on January 9, 1999, at USUHS. This course, currently directed by Debra Ford, MD, FACS, has received excellent evaluations from residents who participated in the first three programs. This one-day course uses the highly skilled surgical talent available throughout the area, and we are indebted to the course lecturers and facilitators for their participation. Reminder: residents who participate in this course must be members of the College's Candidate Group.

The Young Surgeons Committee of the Metropolitan Washington Chapter has won national recognition for its very ambitious and active agenda. None of our success would be possible without the devotion of the members of this committee and the support of the Chapter Council. Many thanks to all. We hope to return these favors with a year of excellent programs.
