Spring Dinner Meeting Brings Together Chapter and Academy
by Edward A. Rankin, MD, FACS President, Washington Academy of Surgery

The Washington Academy of Surgery was very pleased to once again cohost the annual Spring Dinner Meeting on May 7, 1998, with the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. We were honored to have as our guest speaker that night U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher, MD. Dr. Satcher highlighted a wonderful evening with a fascinating historical review of the Office of the Surgeon General and a discussion of his priorities for the nation's public health. His address was well received, as evidenced by the standing ovation from the 115 surgeons and their guests who attended the dinner. The Spring Dinner has continually provided an outstanding opportunity for the Academy and the College Chapter to work together on a major endeavor.

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage chapter participation in other Academy events. For example, the annual Fall Business Meeting, which generally features a guest presentation on a clinical matter, will take place in November. Formal announcements regarding this and other programs will be sent to you as plans are finalized.

Finally, the Academy thanks Chapter President Kurt Newman, MD, FACS, and the rest of the chapter for this opportunity to contribute to the newsletter.
