Zehner Award
by Doug Schwartzentruber, MD, FACS 2002 Chair
Monetary prizes will be awarded to the top three resident finalists,
with papers judged accordingly by the chapter's forum judges. With
the author's consent, papers may be made available for publication
in The American Surgeon.
Every year, the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American
College of Surgeons awards the Harry B. Zehner, Jr., Memorial Traveling
Fellowship. This award is given to an outstanding Metropolitan Washington
surgical or surgical specialty resident who has been nominated by
his or her program training director. The purpose of the award is
to allow the recipient to travel to another residency training program
or laboratory in order to exchange ideas and/or observe surgical
techniques.
The selection committee was privileged to review many strong applications,
reflecting the very high quality of local training programs and
the residents they attract. The recipient of the award this year
is Benjamin Starnes, MD, who is completing a vascular surgery fellowship
at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He will use the award to learn
to perform advanced endovascular procedures at the University of
California, San Francisco. We congratulate Dr. Starnes and the many
outstanding applicants for this award.
