All Surgeons Day 2002
by Stephen R. T. Evans, MD, FACS
All Surgeons Day 2002 proved to be a tremendous success for our
chapter. The program committee of Steven Bielamowicz, Donald Colvin,
Rick Feinberg, Debra Ford, Mary Maniscalco-Theberge, and Marty Paul
did an outstanding job of putting together an extremely exciting
and provocative program. Again, certainly one of the most popular
sections was run by Don Colvin on "Striking Spectacular Cases"
and showed the breadth and depth of expertise on case management
in the Washington area. The second session on complications of head
and neck surgery, vascular surgery, colorectal surgery, and gastrointestinal
surgery included new and exciting approaches to many of the common
complications that are seen in this broad array of disciplines.
Because of the events of September 11 and the potential impact
they will have on the practice of surgery, the program committee
thought it was important to have a completely separate session on
terrorism and the role of the general surgeon.
Three separate sessions were presented: preparedness, burns, and
inhalation, moderated by Jim Jeng; chemical and biological practice,
moderated by Mary ManiscalcoTheberge; and mass casualties, moderated
by Marty Paul. All of these sessions were extremely well attended,
and, because the quality of the delivery was so great, many individuals
went back and forth between sessions to get a sampling of each.
The location once again proved to be highly successful and allowed
for a tremendous turnout and will probably be used again next year
for All Surgeons Day 2003. The program committee would like to thank
all of the presenters and participants during this wonderful educational
day, which reinforces the vitality and strength of our local chapter.
