Editor's Column
by COL Mary Maniscalco-Theberge, MD, FACS
Remember that the focus of surgical care must be the patient. Patients
are the reason that we exist. Patients are not there to make our
life difficult; they are there to enrich our lives and the world.
As a surgeon, when you remove a lifethreatening problem, you of
course have affected the patient. But in addition, you have affected
the patient's family and friends-they still have someone to turn
to. You have affected the patient's work colleagues-they still have
someone to do the job. You have affected your community-the patient
is still a contributing member of society. The privilege of caring
for a patient allows you the opportunity to affect the world. Be
proud of your profession, remember to cure, remember to care.
