FALL 2001 NEWSLETTER

Young Surgeons Committee

by Betsy Vasquez, MD, FACS

The Young Surgeons Committee baton was passed in March 2001. The committee had a very successful, productive season under the leadership of Dr. Craig Shriver. On behalf of the Young Surgeons Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Shriver for all his dedication and good work. I am honored by my new appointment to the chair. I am looking forward to working with this group of energetic, enthusiastic, and talented surgeons.

This spring, the All-City Grand Rounds was held on April 21, 2001, at the Children's National Medical Center. Residents from Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Howard University presented the clinical cases. Dr. Ford moderated the intellectually stimulating discussions. The fall All-City Grand Rounds was held on September 8, 2001. The Washington Hospital Center and Navy Medical Center presented. Dr. Ford again was the moderator.

The Fifth Annual Advanced Operative Strategies Course was held on Saturday, September 15, 2001, at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU). Dr. Craig Shriver served as the course director.

The fall gala event will be held on November 17, 2001, at the Old Ebbitt Grill. Our guest speaker is General Peake, Surgeon General of the Army. "Uptown Blues You Can Use" will provide musical entertainment. We are looking forward to this exciting event.

Finally, we are planning the Seventh Annual Basic Science Review Course, scheduled for January 5, 2002, at USU. Dr. Leon Moores will be directing this program.

As always, the Young Surgeons Committee calendar is full. We hope that we will be seeing you at one, if not all, of these events.
